Detox Your Skin Care

January 2nd, 2010

This is the time of year that everyone turns their thoughts to what they can do to improve their lives.  One of the most effective things we can do is to “Detox our Skin Care”.   Our skin, the largest organ of the human body, absorbs 60% of the ingredients used in personal care products everyday.  One of the most easy and effective steps we can take is to remove skin care products that have toxic chemical links.  We must read labels and know the names of these chemicals that have adverse effect on our health and the environment.

The task of “Detoxing Your Skin Care” can be overwhelming!  Everywhere you look it seems that there are chemicals added to products that are harmful.  Key words to look for are Sodium Laureth Sulfates, Parabens, Propylene glycol, Phthalates, & Petrolatum.  These words may be disguised with other names and go undetected.  The frugal person lines up the products currently on their shelves and in their drawers and shudders when they realize how much money has been spent on products that have ingredients that risk our health.

Sodium Laureth Sulfates (SLS) are detergent like petroleum-based ingredients classified by the EPA as a probable human carcinogen and a know animal carcinogen.  They are found in shampoos, body wash, baby soap, tanning products, moisturizers, and lotions to name a few.  They are used in about 90% of products that produce foam.  The cleaning industry uses SLS for floor cleansers and engine degreasers.  SLS is a harsh skin irritant that may be a potential carcinogen.  Animals exposed to SLS have experienced eye damage, depression of the central nervous system, diarrhea, severe skin irritation and even death..

Propylene glycol promotes moisture retention in cosmetics but is really an industrial anti-freeze and a prevalent ingredient in brake and hydraulic fluid.  It helps make ingredients absorb quickly.  Tests show that it can cause allergic reactions and acne and can be a strong skin irritant.  It also may cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

Parabens are a preservative and are know to be toxic causing skin rashes.  They are endocrine disrupters and may alter the hormone balance.  They have been found in breast tumors and to accumulate in the body and concentrate in fat tissue.

Phthalates are plasticizers or fixatives that help fragrance last longer and transform nail polish from liquid to hard enamel.  It is believed that using these chemicals affect the development of developing male reproductive organs.  The Endocrine Society has actively lobbied to seek a reduction of the human exposure an individual as in utero or in other stages of life.

Petrolatum is mineral oil and a by product of the petroleum industry.  It is made from crude petroleum oil and is used in products as an emollient giving it “slip and slide”.  Many massage product use this as its base as it is cheap and meets the need of the product.  The reality is that mineral oil is also used by the industry as metal-cutting fluid.

Eliminating products that contain these ingredients will help “Detox Your Skin Care”.  Read the ingredient labels and when in doubt refer to SkinDeep.org Database to help research names that you want to know the safety.  Have a great start to your New Year by cleaning out the old toxic skin care products.

Green Holiday Gift Giving

December 13th, 2009

Giving Green Holiday Gifts simply means that the consumer has selected Organic Skin & Home Care Products that are produced and packaged using sustainable manufacturing protocol.  Sweet P’s uses 100% Certified Organic Vegetable Butters and Oils.  Products requiring preservatives like Lotions, Whips, Scrubs and more are protected for the consumer and the environment using an Ecocert Preservative.  There are only a small number of preservatives that have International Ecological stamps of approval.  Many companies will not use these preservatives because the formulas must be kept at a low temperature for the preservative to work.  This requires more production time, increased and higher formula cost.  The consumer receives the increased benefits as the ingredients have been kept at 100 degrees insuring the integrity of the Organic ingredient properties.

Sweetpskincare.com wants our consumers to receive the Organic Skin and Home Care Products they need in exactly the fragrance they want.  If you do not see the fragrance of your choice, you may contact Paula@Sweetpskincare.com or call 520-909-1192.  More than likely, we have your fragrance.  Many of our clients email or phone and find that Sweet P’s has the exact fragrance they want.  We even offer custom fragrancing.  Do you or someone you know like a particular combination of scents but can’t find the combination?  Sweet P’s wants you to know that we love to custom scent.  We look forward to make all of your gift giving Green and exactly as you want.

Getting the most for your money in Skin Care

March 11th, 2009

Today, more than ever, every dime you spend needs to be accounted for.  Money being spent on Skin Care or Scenting your home or business needs to be exactly what you need in the exact fragrance you want (This is Sweet P’s Skin Care’s Mission.).  It is possible to own and use the best that nature offers without spending an arm and a leg.  Keeping your Skin Care and Home rituals simple are essential.  Over 30 years ago, I taught an economics class where students learned to comparative shop.  This group of high school students learned to use the newspapers instead of gas and time to find the best value for shopping.  They soon learned that with a little planning they could stretch their dollars and get more for their money.  Today the internet has taken the place of the traditional tools and you can compare as long as you “know” that they are comparing apples to apples (the same kind and quality).

Organic Skin Care is simple.  You need to utilize the following four steps for healthy skin care:

 1.  Cleanse,  2.  Exfoliate,  3.  Moisturize,  4.  Protect.

Your skin type dictates what products you need.  Your senses determine what kind of fragrance you want.  If your skin tends to break out, the best Organic remedy is Jojoba Oil.  This may sound crazy to some, but Jojoba Oil mimic sebum that usually is overproducing and tends to clog or capture debris or dead skin and thus tricks skin into slowing the production of sebum down and reduces skin break outs.  I have clients that swear by Organic Jojoba Oil.  You can use this product to condition hair, nails, clean and protect skin.

If you have dry, sun-damaged skin, or mature skin is best bet is Organic Shea Butter.  This desert wonder is a wonderful emollient, cleans the skin, protects and actually increases the elasticity that we lose as we get get older.  You can use use Organic Shea Butter to seal in moisture after bath or shower, condition your hair, help prevent stretch marks, and soften scars.  This is another product that my clients swear by.

These two Organic Products are prime examples of getting the most for your money in Skin Care.  Both of these product can take the place of two of the four essential steps to maintaining healthy skin.  Not only do these product do more than one thing but they do not have any toxins, are safe for every age, are eco-friendly, and provide you the best value for your money.  There is a big difference between buying “natural” versus “Certified Organic”.  Natural products may be processed up to one thousand degrees thus destroying many of the wonderful things that the products do.  Certified Organic must be processed at one hundred twenty degrees or less thus retaining all of the wonderful benefits of the oils or butters.  It is up to you whether you want to spend more money on a product that is certified organic and marketed by a big name firm or one that is certified organic and allows you to get the most for your money.

Give Safe Valentine’s Fragrance Gifts

February 3rd, 2009

There is an old but true saying that “nothing triggers memory like fragrance”. Selecting fragrance for the most special people in your life is exclusively personal. Valentine’s is a wonderful time that we take special care to let people we love know that we care by picking just the right Skin Care Products in the fragrance they want. All fragrance is not safe! You want to make sure that the gift you are giving is not toxic to the person you are giving it you.

There are three kinds of oils used to fragrance products. The botanical form of these oils are called Essential Oils and are derived from extracting oils from the plants themselves. The second and third and largest kind of oils used to fragrance are synthetic. Most fragrances are synthetic and made with chemicals that contain preservatives called parabens. Parabens are toxic to the human body and are not ecologically friendly. Most products containing fragrance whether a dishwashing detergent, dryer clothes softener sheet, or lotion are more than likely using synthetic paraben fragrance oils. The third kind of fragrance oils are synthetic and not made with parabens. There are less than a handful of companies that guarantee that the fragrances they manufacture contain no parabens.

How do you know that the products you buy are being fragranced with either essential or fragrance oils that are paraben free? Companies that are health conscience and determined to be ecologically sound for humans as well as the environment usually let the buyer know and have proven tract records. Sweet P’s wants you to know that all of the oils used to fragrance products are either Essential or Fragrance Oils guaranteed to not have parabens. Buy your loved ones exactly the fragrance they love in the products they need knowing that you have done so reassured that these gifts are safe. Enjoy triggering Happy and Safe Valentine’s Memories!

Why Use Organic Skin Care Products

January 4th, 2009

Organic Skin Care products clean, nourish and protect skin with the best that nature provides without harmful toxic chemicals.    Skin is the largest organ of the human body.  It absorbs 60% of the ingredients used every day.  The average number of ingredients absorbed is 126.  These products seep through the skin, rinse down the drain and are cause for concern for human health and the impact on the environment.

There are three kinds of personal care products, Organic, Natural and Petrochemicals.  The most harmful are the petrochemical.  Petrochemical Emollients (mineral oil, petroleum jelly, etc…) used on skin come from the same factory that makes gas for cars.  Research has shown that these are cancer producers or contributors and that the chemicals accumulate in the body’s organs.  Natural may mean that the oils and butters that used for the base product may be processed as high as 1000 degrees.  This high heat has the ability for companies to process the oils quickly but also destroying most of the good properties of the plant.  Certified Organic means that the oils and butters are processed at or below 120 degrees retaining the nourishing, hydrating, antibacterial and protecting qualities that nature intended.

You are in the driver’s seat.  Reading labels is essential.  Having the knowledge to know what the labels say is imperative.  Advertising can be so enticing and leave you with shelves of products loaded with chemicals with names like parabens, sodium laureth sulfates, and DEA’s.  These chemicals have had numerous studies that demonstrate how adverse they are to the human body and our environment.  Choose carefully and knowledgeably and you will have products that do exactly what they are intended.

All of our products are guaranteed to be Certified Organic.   Visit Sweet P’s Skincare and find out more about luxury organic skin care.
