Harvesting the desert’s “superfruit”-Prickly Pear

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Nature has blessed the desert where I live and harvest with good winter rains, mild winter temperatures, and great summer monsoons.  One of the outcomes of this past years weather is that the fruit on the pads of the prickly pear cacti are full and the fruit for the most part are large and perfectly ripe.   I select the pears that are deep magenta/burgundy color.  I purposefully walk out in desert in the early morning hours with my five gallon bucket, my husband’s best heavy duty barbecue tongs (don’t let him know that I have borrowed these beauties), and my eyes searching the ground for the deserts natural habitat.  I never know which of nature’s wonders I am going to run into.  Several weeks ago, I was greeted by a large deer standing within a few feet of my path. Two days ago, all I could hear was the sound of birds chirping as I pulled the fruit off of the cactus pads.  I know that I have hours of work ahead to harvest the juice but I also know that it is worth all of the effort.  I feel a great kinship to my Grandmother, Nell Hodge, that harvested fruits and vegetables to feed her family of eleven children.  I also respect the history of the harvesting of this fruit.  Hundreds of years ago, the Indians, in particular where I live the Hohokam, used all parts of the prickly pear for food, health remedies and dyes.

Harvesting the prickly pear means that I have about one months window of opportunity to pluck these fruit and extract the pulp and juice contained inside one of nature’s well protected plants.  The outside of the fruit are covered in tiny fine spines that somehow find the way to lodge in my skin to remind me that I need to hold them with respect!  It takes hours to slice, scoop and juice the pears.  They fill my freezer in heavy duty sealed bags (and any friend’s that happens to have any space) in anticipation for the day the juice is needed for my Prickly Pear Juice Lotion or for my Cactus Flower Facial Hydration Mist.  I look forward to this time of the year almost as much as my husband looks forward to the beginning of football season ( I did say almost!).

The harvesting of Prickly Pear is one of natures sustainable desert crops that weathers the ups and downs of climate change.  This years harvest is wonderful!  I know that the clients that enjoy the mist of Cactus Flower Facial Hydration Mist instantly feel the difference in the texture and moisture of their skin.  It amazes me that even hundreds of years ago, that the Indians understood that the juice had the power to treat burns and take the sting out of sunburn.  Somehow, history has a way of recycling and returning its knowledge back to us so that we can use what they knew all along.  Eight years ago, when Sweet P’s was born, one of the first Spa treatments I created was for the La Sonora Spa at Tanque Verde Resort Ranch was the Prickly Pear Treatment.  Today, Sweet P’s Cactus Flower Hydration Mist is being used across the US and even in France.  Thanks to Kelly Tirman for the inspiration for the Mist and to the good people of OpenSkyProject.com that blog and tell their audiences about the products they personally have tried, one of Sweet P’s best selling products is the Cactus Flower Mist and the Prickly Pear Juice Lotion.  Who knew that out my backdoor could be the raw ingredient for such a potent antioxidant and true skin nourishment?  Today more than ever, we need to respect the crops that are sustainable like the prickly pear.  Nature is the only touch that makes contact with these crops (outside of my tongs) as the earth and sky provide all the nourishment needed.  Wildcrafted crops are the true origin of organic produce.  It is a gift that at the end of every summer, the prickly pear fruit ripens and one that I hope to have many more to enjoy to harvest.

Four Steps to “CEAP” Healthy Skin

Friday, August 13th, 2010

CEAP!  C-cleanse, E-exfoliate, A-antioxidant, and P-protect.  Keep your skin healthy using four simple steps, CEAP.  ”CEAP”ing skin healthy really is easy, quick and efficient.  The hard part is finding the products that you need for each step.  All skin is not created equal even on our own bodies.  Our lower extremities have thicker tougher skin as opposed to our facial and neck area skin that is thinner and more fragile.  So how can we accommodate the variety of skin needs without filling our shelves with vast amount of products?  The key is finding the organic products that work most effectively on your skin and knowing how to use them.  Let’s take each step one at a time and focus on the body first.

Cleansing your body is how you choose to remove dirt, bacteria, grim, and sweat.  There are three kinds of cleansing products that are organic.  Organic Soap (Superior Organic Soap), Omega 3 Hemp Glycerin Soap, and Body Wash (Body Bubbles).  Superior Organic Soap cleanses with creamy bubbles that lift away grim leaving traces of the rich butters and oils that keep skin from being tight and stripped.  These soaps take four weeks to produce but are well worth the wait.  Most commercial soaps, even one’s that declare that they are moisturizing, use animal fats or petroleum to add softness to the skin.  This is the equivalent to wiping mineral oil or animal fat over your skin.  As pleasant sounding as this is, we also compete with alcohol based bacterial products.  The most recent medical information warns us to stop using bacteria wipes and gels and go back to time honored bar soap.  Another commercial bar soap is called triple milled.  Depending on the ingredients, this can mean that left over bar soaps. glycerin soap and other additives are ground and reformulated with water to create the bars.  The second cleansing alternative is Omega 3 Hemp Glycerin Soap.  Hemp oil is high in providing the emollience of the vegetable version of omega three normally found in fish.  Sweet P’s offers customization of our Custom Glycerin Soap so that you may add butters or even essential oils that control bacteria like calming Lavender or astringent Tea Tree Oils.  Lastly, Sweet P’s Body Bubbles (Hand and Body Wash), provides a unique formula combining the winning abilities of Jojoba and Coconut Oils to bubble away dirt without SLS, parabens or phythlates .  Custom Glycerin Soap and Body Bubbles may be scented anyway you choose so that you may delight your sense or introduce aromatherapy results to your body.  Your skin determines which kind of product you need.

The second step to healthy skin is to exfoliate.  There are two kinds of exfoliants, chemical or mechanical.  Organic exfoliants are mechanical and easily controlled.  It is essential to exfoliate to remove dead, dry skin cells that can clog pores, help create blemishes, make skin appear rough and dry.  Exfoliating even helps encourage increase in cell turnover that we lose the older we get.  At birth a baby’s skin sheds every two weeks.  At age 50, our skin takes 4 to 6 weeks to turnover.  We increase the circulation to our skin and can even help fade age spots by increasing the circulation and cell turnover.  Sweet P’s uses Organic Brown Sugar, White Refined Sugar and Sea Salts in three preparations whipped into an Organic Shea Butter, Jojoba and Olive Oil base.  Organic Brown Sugar Scrub is fabulous head to toe.  Buttery Creme Sugar Scrub is wonderful all over the body and is gentle enough for cracked heel skin.  The most aggressive full body exfoliant is our Souffle Salt Scrub as sea salt crystals take a long time to dissolve.  You control how much you need to remove dry skin cells by the amount of moisture you use prior to applying the scrub.  Skin is fresh and ready for the third essential step to health skin.

Antioxidant Treatments are the third step.  Antioxidants provide a layer of protection against free radicals and environmental damage.  Sweet P’s has two products that are super rich and concentrated in our formulation.  We use wildcrafted prickly pear juice in the liquid portion of our formulas.  I hand pick the fruit and prepare the juice each year.  Prickly Pear Juice Lotion has an 80% concentration of juice that has been documented to take the sting out of sunburn.  Cactus Flower Hydrating Facial Mist is a fabulous hydrator, antioxidant, cell plumper and even increases the cell production.  Both of these products are incredible head to toe.  Skin literally soaks in the organic properties.

The Fourth and final step is protection.  I know you are probably saying what happened to moisturize.  Sweet P’s Organic Shea Butter Sun Block moisturizes while it immediately protects your skin.  There are two kinds of sun protection.  Chemical sun protection takes at least 20 minutes for the skin to absorb along with the associated toxic properties.  Most chemical sun protection products do not protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays.  Physical sun protections uses minerals like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in their formulas to lay a protective cover over the skin that works immediately and protect from both kind of rays.

“CEAP”ing Healthy body skin is a basic as four steps.  These are easy to remember and even easier to use.  Some of our skin may need additional help with moisturizers, butters and oils but the essentials breakdown to 4 simple steps. C means find the cleanser that is right for your body needs.  E means remove dry skin cells by exfoliating.  A means protect your skin from free radicals and environmental damage by using antioxidants. Finally, P means protect your skin from sun damage that ages, burns, dries, and can cause cancer.

Why Use Organic Skin Care Products

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Organic Skin Care products clean, nourish and protect skin with the best that nature provides without harmful toxic chemicals.    Skin is the largest organ of the human body.  It absorbs 60% of the ingredients used every day.  The average number of ingredients absorbed is 126.  These products seep through the skin, rinse down the drain and are cause for concern for human health and the impact on the environment.

There are three kinds of personal care products, Organic, Natural and Petrochemicals.  The most harmful are the petrochemical.  Petrochemical Emollients (mineral oil, petroleum jelly, etc…) used on skin come from the same factory that makes gas for cars.  Research has shown that these are cancer producers or contributors and that the chemicals accumulate in the body’s organs.  Natural may mean that the oils and butters that used for the base product may be processed as high as 1000 degrees.  This high heat has the ability for companies to process the oils quickly but also destroying most of the good properties of the plant.  Certified Organic means that the oils and butters are processed at or below 120 degrees retaining the nourishing, hydrating, antibacterial and protecting qualities that nature intended.

You are in the driver’s seat.  Reading labels is essential.  Having the knowledge to know what the labels say is imperative.  Advertising can be so enticing and leave you with shelves of products loaded with chemicals with names like parabens, sodium laureth sulfates, and DEA’s.  These chemicals have had numerous studies that demonstrate how adverse they are to the human body and our environment.  Choose carefully and knowledgeably and you will have products that do exactly what they are intended.

All of our products are guaranteed to be Certified Organic.   Visit Sweet P’s Skincare and find out more about luxury organic skin care.
